Sphinx is one of the New Olympians. She appears in the unproduced Gargoyles spinoff.

Real World Background

Sphinx is named after the mythical figure of the same name. In Egyptian myth, the sphinx is depicted as a human-headed lion and was used a symbol of the Pharaohs. The most famous example is the giant statue at Giza. In classical mythology, the Sphinx was depicted as a lion with a woman's head and wings. It patrolled the road to Thebes and asked all travellers passing through a riddle: What creature walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon and three legs in the evening? Those who failed to answer correctly were killed by the beast until the hero Oedipus answered correctly: Man, as a baby he crawls on all fours, in adulthood he walks upright and in old age he walks with the aid of a cane. Enraged at how her riddle had finally been solved, the Sphinx committed suicide.
